Department of Justice Asked to Investigate Omaha Police Department

Tuesday morning, March 13, the Omahans for Justice Alliance announced that it had sent a request to the Department of Justice Special Litigation Section for an investigation of the Omaha Police Department.

The Omahans for Justice Alliance consists of a number of individuals and organizations, including the NAACP, The Progressive Research Institute of Nebraska, Black Men United, The ACLU, Nebraskans for Peace and others. The complaint revolves around the number of incidents of improper police actions over the past few years resulting in physical harm to civilians and violations of civil rights.

The complaint was drawn up by Samuel Walker, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Criminology and Criminal Justice at UNO. Professor Walker is one of the top scholars in the country in the area of police/community relations.
